Breakfast in Breaux Bridge

Breakfast in Breaux Bridge

Breaux Bridge, Louisiana is a small town located in St. Martin Parish near the headwaters of the Bayou Teche. Breaux Bridge is often referred to as the gateway to authentic Cajun culture.

In 1771 Acadian pioneer Firmin Breaux began buying land which is now the city of Breaux Bridge. The first bridge was built across the Bayou Teche in 1799.

One of Breaux Bridge’s main attractions is its cuisine, especially crawfish. Restaurants of Breaux Bridge were the first to offer this little crustacean openly on their menus. It is in this area of the Atchafalaya River Basin that the now world famous crawfish etouffee was created. Breaux Bridge became so well known for its crawfish farming that the Louisiana legislature, in 1959, designated Breaux Bridge as “la capitale Mondiale de l’ecrevisse” or “the crawfish capital of the world”.

And now for breakfast… Café Des Mis is located in historic downtown Breaux Bridge. Each Saturday morning beginning at 8:30 they serve breakfast and provide a live authentic Zydeco band for entertainment and dancing “Laissez les bon temps roulez” in other words “Let the Good Times Roll”.  I devoured the item on the menu called Eggs Benaud with a side of Cheese Grits. I chose to have mine prepared half and half. This is described in the menu photograph. I now understand the term “joie de vivre” – “Joy of Living”.
