Full Moon Over White Sands – Friday The 13th

These full moon photos were shot in White Sands National Monument, NM on Friday, June 13, 2014. It was the first full moon in June on Friday the 13th since 1919. October 13, 2000 was the last Friday full moon. The next Friday the 13th full moon will  occur on August 13, 2049. Mark your calendar. It’s also the photographer’s 110th birthday. The next full moon will occur on July 12, 2014.

The June full moon has several different nicknames. The” Strawberry” name was given by Native American tribes because this was the time of year to harvest the strawberry fruit. The” Rose” moon originates in Europe because this is the time of the year when these flowers generally have their first set of sweet smelling blooms. The “Honey” moon is so named because June is a big month for weddings.

Chihuly at the Dallas Arboretum

Dale Chihuly is an American glass sculptor and entrepreneur who lives in Tacoma, WA. His works are considered unique to the field of blown glass, “moving it into the realm of large-scale sculpture”. Chihuly’s works can be found in collections throughout the world.

I shot these photographs when the Dallas Arboretum featured many of his sculptures in 2012.
