Texas Bluebonnets

TEXAS BLUEBONNETS

Legend has it that a little Comanche girl, in the secret of darkness, built a fire and sacrificed her favorite doll to the Great Spirits in hopes of ending a terrible drought and save her people who had angered the Spirits. She scattered the ashes to the Four Winds and lay down to sleep.  Upon awakening the next morning she found where the ashes had fallen the ground was covered with beautiful blue flowers.

These beautiful flowers, called Bluebonnets, still bloom each spring in the fields of Texas.

This Texas tale is retold and illustrated by Tomie dePaola in his book, The Legend of the Bluebonnet.

The Bluebonnet is a form of wild lupine known by other names including  Lupine, Buffalo Clover, Wolf Flower and “El Conejo” .  Bluebonnet is the most recognized and popular name. It is believed that when white settlers moved to Texas they named these blue flowers Bluebonnets  because they looked like the bonnets worn by the pioneer women.Bluebonnet ( Lupine)Bluebonnets (2)
